Are you afraid of your child having an accident in traffic?

You might as well admit it; approximately 55 % of all parents feel that way. The majority of them feel better when their child is taken safely to school or to friends in the afternoon and back again by car. Oh, that’s the way you do it, too? But how can your child learn how to deal with traffic at all in order to face it safely?

Children gain Social Skills by Playing with Friends

Children make friends on their way to school and cope with the school way together. Playing with friends helps develop social skills. The “parent’s cab” – certainly the result of good intentions – has many disadvantages for the child’s health, lack of exercise among others. Because of the high number of “parent’s cabs” – especially in front of schools – many children are endangered even more and their natural playgrounds are restricted!

Children need Exercise for their Healthy Development

It´s scientifically proven that lack of exercise – besides postural anomalies and trouble with learning for example – causes perceptual disorder and asynergia. However, these abilities - perception and coordination - are important for behavior and reaction on the street! Sports scientists affirm that humans have an innate urge to move which they want to act out in childhood in order to get to know their body and its possibilities. By exercising independently, children can be boosted and learn to be independent. It is not about turning your child into a professional athlete, but about giving him or her the possibility to explore the area where he or she plays and lives in.

The Team play of Perception and Movement has to be Practiced

Stimuli are perceived by human sense organs and then a particular behavior pattern is executed. We pedestrians for example give way to a fast approaching car. But before we were able to react like this, we had to learn. That is, perception and the reaction caused by it have to be practiced. This is only possible in reality. Modern computer programs, on the other hand, can only make a small contribution to the education of your child concerning traffic. Instead of imparting “second hand knowledge” via computer you should offer more possibilities to your children to actively get to know their ways to school and free time.

The Sense of a Matter comes with the Senses

An example: A real car that drives past while you are waiting with your child on the side of the road is much more tangible than one that is seen on the screen or from the window of the parents cab. The feeling of danger emanating from it will not only be felt by you but also by your child.

How can you achieve more Security and Movement?

Please be active in the traffic education of your children. They understand “palpable” arguments better than forbiddances. Formulate positively what your child should do and shortly explain to him or her why. You can make the streets around schools and kindergarten safer if you stop being the “parent’s cab”. Eventually your children and all other children will be grateful to you. In kindergartens, children’s day homes, day homes for school children and schools children should exercise more. The KUK (children` s accident commission) teaches educators, inregard to active games in kindergarten and elementary schools.

Children need more Exercise!

So please make an effort to increase the number of play areas and the freedom of movement in your city! For example, in the section “planning”, the KUK deals with making dangerous situations in traffic less dangerous for children. We aim at making it possible and safe for children to move independently in the streets.
